President's Message

Welcome from the Afro-American Club of Citrus County.
As we look back on the past year, we have a lot to celebrate. We continued on a path to providing even more opportunities to young people through our scholarship program. Fueled by a major fundraising effort in 2024, we were able to top last year's record of $12,500 in awards by making 18 awards totaling $21,000. We got to meet many of the awardees and their families at our scholarship luncheon this past June. It was heartening to hear the stories of these bright young people who will become nurses, engineers, psychologists, novelists, teachers, firefighters and automobile mechanics.

There are so many people to thank for this success. Our fundraising committee did an admirable job of reaching out to the local business community for donations to support our work. We were thrilled with the support from our donors, some who provided sizable donations that we weren't sure were possible. Our education committee worked tirelessly with the local high schools and other organizations to identify deserving students and to select the wonderful young people we awarded scholarships to. Our planning committee excelled in creating three events that energized our club members, our donors and guests.

Our club continues to be a good community partner as we increased our activity in supporting other organizations. We were active in Martin Luther King celebrations. We supported the Emancipation Day celebration in Brooksville. We participated in Juneteenth celebrations that were a collaboration between Crystal River and Inverness: Our members are frequently called on to be speakers at events across the county. We rejoined the Citrus County Chamber of Commerce. We continue to support the Rotary, Habitat for Humanity, Friends of Crystal Memorial Gardens and the Carver Center.

Our challenge for the future is to attract the next generation of leaders to be members of our club. We have operated in Citrus County for 36 years. There is no reason we can't be around for many more years. To do so we need to inject new blood into our membership. Those of you reading this  are encouraged to help our membership committee build our future.

Thank you for your continued support.
